South Carolina prison inmate Carl Richard Smith Jr. admitted up to a judge Monday that he participated in a sextortion scheme Greenville that is targeting Army Jared Johns, whom passed away by committing suicide on Sept. 11, 2018.
But Smith, whom showed up via video clip from the Livesay Correctional Institution in Spartanburg, said he played merely a limited role in the plot.
As an element of a handle prosecutors, Smith, 45, pleaded guilty to 1 count of blackmail. Circuit Court Judge Alex Kinlaw stated Smith will be sentenced later.
Smith’s lawyer, Greenville lawyer William G. Yarborough, said after the hearing that Smith has decided to c perate with prosecutors in the full instance against co-defendant John William Dobbins. Inturn, Yarborough said, prosecutors will maybe not seek to incorporate additional time to your 15-year prison phrase that Smith is serving for a 2015 conviction in Greenville County for assault and battery pack of the high and nature that is aggravated.
“He seems awful” about Johns’ death, Yarborough stated.
